Setup Two-Factor Authentication without a Phone Number

December 16, 2019 By admin_how_OS Leave a Comment

Twitter supported two-factor authentication (2FA). But this service always required you to include a phone number as an additional form of identification. But now Twitter has changed its 2FA system to eliminate that dependency.

While using Twitter, you should be using two-factor authentication. 2FA requires you to enter a password and use a secondary means of proving your identity: something you know your password, with something you have, like a phone, security key, or authentication app.

Recently Twitter included made that a phone number. The problem is that SIM swapping are on the rise, making it possible to hijack phone numbers. In fact, the interesting thing happened to Twitter CEO which may explain the company’s decision to roll out this change for all users.

Twitter’s engineers eliminate the requirement for you to add a phone number to your Twitter account as a secondary means of identification.

Now you can use a mobile security authentication app instead. Google Authenticator, Authy, LastPass and others offer this functionality. These apps generate one-time passwords that stay in lock-step with a server using an algorithm.

according to Twitter security engineer Jared Miller:

If you’re using a physical security key like the Yubikey, unfortunately, you’ll still need to fall back on a mobile security authentication app. He explains that physical security keys are not supported outside of Twitter’s Web interface, and acknowledged it’s an imperfect solution: “We know this might not be ideal but we’re going to keep working on it!”

Set up two-factor authentication on Twitter:

Follow the below mention steps tp set up 2FA on twitter:

Step 1:

At first, open Twitter in your Web browser.

Step 2:

Now click on your account info in the upper left.

Step 3:

Tap Settings and Privacy.

Step 4:

Then tap Account.

Step 5:

Again tap on Security.

Step 6:

Now tap Two-factor authentication. Choose the methods of two-factor authentication. Your choices are a text message, authentication app, and security key. Now deactivate text message if you wish to remove your phone number from Twitter’s preferences.

Remove your phone number from Twitter preferences

From the account info screen:

Step 1:

Click on Settings and privacy.

Step 2:

Now tap Account

Step 3:

Tap Phone under the Login and security option.

Step 4:

Then Tap Delete phone number.

Step 5:

At last Tap Yes, delete to confirm.

Conclusion:

Removing 2FA from a dependency on a phone number provides Twitter users with an additional element of security that will make it difficult to take over Twitter accounts using criminal means like SIM swapping.

Hopefully, you get it very well but if you still have anything to ask then let us know in the comment section below!
