How To Fix MacBook Pro Black Screen Issue

It must be quite easy to explain that as potential hardware issues, and in some rare situations that might be the case. But it’s more often a software problem that can fix some easy troubleshooting steps.

Our reader experience his MacBook Pro, which out of the blue rebooted to a fully dark screen. As it’s rare, we examined this would be the best opportunity to share 3 potential fixes to this issue, and the same problems, should you experience a dark screen on the start of PC.

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) to Resolve the Black Display on Boot

Initially, you want to fix nearly every power-related problems on a Mac to reset the SMC, or System Management Controller. Also, it dumps and reset settings for anything power management related, and is long known to fix issues with things like heat, fans, sleeping issues, and of course, display problems.

On any advance MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with a built-in battery. It’s just about all of them:

Step 1:

Turn off the Mac and plug it to your MagSafe adapter and a wall outlet as usual

Step 2:

Then hold down the Shift+Control+Option+Power button simultaneously for a few seconds

Step 3:

Then release all keys simultaneously, then boot the Mac as usual

Older Macs can also find directions for the same process on their machines, it’s quite different if you take out the battery.

When the Mac boots, hopefully, the black screen disappear and you’re back to normal. But in case if it still creates the issue then dive down below:

Try a Keypress Order to Ditch the Black Screen

Our readers might recall that we discuss some OS X keyboard shortcuts for the Sleep, Shutdown, and Restart controls of every Mac. So, this little keypress order takes the benefits of those. Oddly enough, it looks to work to fix some of the mystery Mac booting into black screen problems. Here’s the precise order to follow:

Step 1:

Hit the Power / OFF button when this will bring up the dialog box that you can’t view

Step 2:

Then hit the “S” button – this is the shortcut to sleep the Mac

Step 3:

Then hold down the Power button until a difficult shut down is forced

Step 4:

Wait a while, then press the Power button again to enable it

Some other users suggest that resetting PRAM helped them too, but most power problems are fixed by the SMC reset.

Try a PRAM Reset to Fix the Black Boot Display

If the above two methods failed, then a PRAM reset can do the trick, as lots of the reader can suggest this. It can be done after restarting the Mac similar to an SMC reset:

Step 1:

At first, reboot the Mac and whenever you hear the boot chime, hold down the Command+Option+P+R keys simultaneously

Step 2:

After you hear the boot sound again, the PRAM reset so allow the Mac boot again as usual

At this point, your Mac starts to boot again as usual and it no longer has the black display, loading Mac OS X or Mac OS.

Type Password, Press Return

Here’s an interesting option to find if they press the black screen on boot. When they input their daily login password and press the Enter/Return key, the Mac boots up and they’re good to go.

Step 1:

When the Mac boots into the black screen, input the password you like to use to login to the Mac as usual

Step 2:

Press the Return key

If it works, you’ll know besides instantly as the black screen provides the way to the regular Mac OS desktop.

Disable Automatic Graphics Switching

Some MacBook Pro version has dual graphics cards that automatically switch. For some reason, those versions can certainly boot directly to a black screen. Often this can be remedied by just turning off automatic graphics card (GPU) switching on MacBook Pro as mentioned here:

Step 1:

From the Apple menu select “System Preferences” then head over to “Energy Saver”

Step 2:

Toggle the switch located next to ‘Automatic Graphics Switching’ to disable it.

Step 3:

Then restart the Mac.
