Facebook fixes iOS app camera bug

December 3, 2019 By admin_how_OS Leave a Comment

Facebook has pushed out a new build of its iOS app that corrects a previously-identified bug that could accidentally activate the iPhone’s camera. The new version (build 247) is available for quick download from the App Store accepting your phone hasn’t already updated.

The bug caused the camera’s view to show up in a strip on one side of the screen when users click on photos. Facebook says it was accidentally introduced as part of an update to the app launched last week.

Joshua Maddux:

The company solves the problem with another update after Web strategist Joshua Maddux drew attention to it on Twitter. He said it made him concerned that Facebook could be using facial recognition to see users’ reactions to posts. He also notice that he could see the camera open behind his Facebook feed while scrolling through the app.

“(E)ven if it’s an error it shows that they can access and keep the camera behind something,” Maddux, tweeted Tuesday. “That’s the part for me that’s crazy.”

Rosen:

Facebook VP of Integrity Guy Rosen also confirmed the bug in a tweet of his own and said:

“that no photos had been uploaded to Facebook as a result of the bug”

He also said that FB was rushing a new build out to correct the problem.

Facebook has no evidence that any photos or videos were uploaded as a result of the glitch, a company spokesperson said.

In the meantime, Facebook users were disallowing camera access by the app to avoid privacy issues. Rosen has since indicated that build was released, and it’s now available for download and update.

according to Facebook:

Apple has approved the app update that repairs the bug and users can now install it to fix the problem.
